Boxing and Business – How to Take a Hit, Bob and Throw Your Power Punch

The direct relationship of training to box and how it relates to business and investing strategies

DELTA, BC –June 17, 2009 – Investorideas.com founder and President Dawn Van Zant discusses the direct relationship of training to box and how it relates to business and investing strategies.

Boxing and Business
Dawn Van Zant

Yesterday I had a rough day at Investorideas.com, frustrated and felt like I had no power and control over the outcome of my business. I really wanted to just hit something.

Normally as a woman and an older woman at that, that frustration would lead to just more frustration. But I am one of the fortunate women in business who had a solution waiting for her that evening- boxing!

I told my trainer I really just wanted to hit something and that I felt like I had taken some pretty big hits in the day.
He said we could work on that.

Our training is intense and focuses a lot on endurance. It teaches me every session that I have more in me than I think. Just when I think I have nothing left, I can do 10 more push-ups (man push –ups by the way) or throw more punches or do 20 more sit-ups. There is always more in me.

He then planned the work –out on bobbing to avoid a punch and coming back poised to throw your power punch.
If any of you have done boxing training, you know that just continuous bobbing is exhausting and hard on the legs as you are always in fighting stance. But the real psychological play is being in that place mentally where you just learned how to avoid taking a hit and then you have the power to react and throw your big punch. Give them a right hook!

My coach, Greg Harrison, was smart enough to take my mental challenge, frustration and failure and turn me around physically into a scenario where it then made sense in my mind. His motto, like a lot of athletes is “strong body – strong mind”. It also correlates, quiet body- quiet mind.

After a strenuous work- out, you are so physically exhausted that you find some inner calm again.

I highly recommend the training and work out to anyone (especially women) in the investing business, as we are always taking a hit out of nowhere. Wouldn’t it be great to be able to come back fighting?
