The crypto market has had a tumultuous week with Bitcoin’s (BTC) market cap dropping roughly 20 percent in the last seven days, according to data from CoinMarketCap. Bitcoin is also now trading for about $16,565 USD, after remaining stable and staying close to around $20,000 for the past few months.

This is largely attributed to fallout from the implosion of Bahamas based cryptocurrency exchange FTX. CNN reports that FTX – “one of the biggest and most powerful players in the industry” – filed for bankruptcy on Friday, and is now being investigated by local authorities for potential criminal misconduct. Described by some as the crypto world’s “Lehman moment,” the fall of FTX was also preceded, according to the report, “by the decision to lend billions of dollars’ worth of customer assets to fund risky bets by Alameda, [CEO Sam] Bankman-Fried’s crypto hedge fund.”

Cointelegraph reports that crypto investors have increasingly turned to self-custody solutions following the FTX collapse, citing data from analytics provider Glassnode. On-chain exchange flow data is showing a surge in withdrawals to self-custody wallets, possibly indicating a decline in confidence in centralized crypto exchanges. Speaking to Cointelegraph, Microstrategy’s Executive Chairman Michael Saylor supported this view, saying:

“In systems where there is no self-custody, the custodians accumulate too much power and then they can abuse that power.”

He went on to say:

“If you can’t self-custody your coin, there’s no way to establish a decentralized network.”

Canaan Inc. (NasdaqGM:CAN) has announced its unaudited financial results for the three months ended September 30, 2022. Highlights for the quarter include revenue of $137.5 million USD, net income of $8.6 million, and 3.5 million Thash/s of total computing power sold. The company’s CEO Nangeng Zhang said:

"The bitcoin mining market deteriorated during the third quarter, as the bitcoin price fluctuated and further dipped to around sixteen thousand dollars recently. The negative market dynamics have significantly hindered bitcoin miners' revenues and cash flows. As miners are forced to cut their demand for computing power, we had to adjust down our selling price in response.”

Bitfarms Ltd. (NasdaqGM:BITF) has reported its financial results for Q3. Highlights include a total revenue of $33 million, and the mining of 1,515 BTC. Geoff Morphy, the company’s President and COO, said:

“In Q3 2022, we continued to execute our growth plan and deliver industry leading production metrics, which make us confident we will manage current challenges and thrive. We averaged 16.5 BTC per day in Q3 2022. As a result, we mined 3,733 BTC in the first nine months of 2022, surpassing the 3,453 BTC mined in all of 2021. For the second year in a row, Bitfarms is on pace to be one of the largest known producers of Bitcoin.“

ArcelorMittal (NYSE:MT) has reported its third quarter results for 2022. Highlights include a net income of $1 billion for the quarter – down from $3.9 billion in the previous quarter, which was influenced “by a negative price-cost effect, energy costs headwinds and a 5.6% sequential decrease in steel shipments.” The company’s CEO, Aditya Mittal, said:

“The strong market conditions enjoyed for much of the past two years deteriorated in the third quarter as seasonally lower shipments, a reduction in exceptional price levels, destocking and higher energy costs combined to put profits under pressure. The business responded quickly to the changing environment, cutting higher cost capacity to manage addressable demand and reduce fixed costs, and reducing European gas consumption by 30%.”

Newcrest Mining Limited (TSX:NCM) has announced that it is proceeding with the West Dome Stage 8 cutback at its Telfer operation, with the Newcrest Board having approved a total investment of $150 million USD inclusive of mine operating costs and $51 million of capitalised production stripping. The cutback, according to the press release, “underpins continuity of operations at Telfer, with the mine now expected to extend operations into early FY25.” The company’s Managing Director and CEO, Sandeep Biswas, said:

"We are delighted to further extend the life of our Telfer operation, highlighting our ability to maximise the full potential of our assets through our strong technical expertise. Telfer is strategically positioned in the highly prospective Paterson Province and we are continuing to progress several potential options to expand the resource base in the open pits and underground to unlock additional value.”

Cameco Corporation (NYSE:CCJ) has reported that the first pounds of uranium ore from the McArthur River mine have now been milled and packaged at the Key Lake mill following their transition back into normal operations. Production had been paused for four years since January 2018 due to “persistent weakness in the global uranium market.” Cameco President and CEO Tim Gitzel said:

"McArthur River and Key Lake are among the best and most prolific uranium assets on the planet, and after building homes for these pounds in our long-term contract portfolio, we are delighted to have them back in production. Market conditions have continued to strengthen since we announced their planned restart, with growing geopolitical uncertainty adding to energy security concerns worldwide, and the ongoing global emphasis on decarbonization and electrification only gaining momentum."

Coeur Mining, Inc. (NYSE:CDE) has reported its third quarter 2022 financial results. Highlights include a revenue of $183 million, and gold and silver production totalling 83,438 ounces and 2.4 million ounces, respectively. Mitchell J. Krebs, the company’s President and CEO, said:

"Coeur experienced another steady operational quarter, and we are on-track to deliver a strong fourth quarter from each of our four operations. While financial results were negatively impacted by lower average realized prices, lower grades at Palmarejo, and ongoing inflationary pressures, we are well-positioned to achieve our full-year 2022 production and cost guidance thanks to a tremendous effort and effective cost management by our site operating teams.”

Today’s podcast overview/transcript:

In today’s podcast we look at the recent Midterm results and how this impacted cannabis legalisation and decriminalisation in the U.S.

Maryland and Missouri joined 19 other states and the District of Columbia in legalising recreational cannabis, while legalisation proposals did not pass in Arkansas, North Dakota and South Dakota.

Following the passage of Maryland’s Question 4, adults in the state will be allowed to possess up to 1.5 ounces, or two marijuana plants, beginning July 1, 2023. The amendment also allows for the expungement of records for people arrested for cannabis possession, and for people serving time for simple possession to have their sentences reconsidered. It would also establish a cannabis business assistance fund for small businesses, as well as minority- and women-owned businesses, entering the cannabis industry. Laws surrounding liscensing and taxation still need to be determined.

In Missouri, voters approved the state’s Amendment 3, which removes existing prohibitions on marijuana and allows adults to purchase and possess up to three ounces and grow up to six flowering plants at home. A 6% sales tax will go toward facilitating automatic expungements for certain nonviolent cannabis offences, veterans’ health care, substance misuse treatment and the state’s public defender system. It also adds at least 144 new small business licensees to the existing businesses licensed for medical marijuana, according to Legal Missouri 2022, the advocacy group that sponsored the measure. New licence holders will be selected by lottery.

While these two states moving forward was another great win for cannabis advocacy, are states saw more of the same as voters in Arkansas rejected Issue 4, which would have allowed for the purchase of up to an ounce of marijuana from licensed retailers, and in North Dakota, voters rejected Measure 2, which would have allowed for the possession of up to an ounce of marijuana and finally voters in South Dakota rejected Measure 27, which would have legalised possession of up to one ounce of marijuana.

Moving away from the State level, voters in five Texas cities decided in favour of municipal ballot initiatives eliminating the local enforcement of low-level cannabis offences.

Voters in the cities of DentonKilleenSan MarcosElgin and Harker Heights decided ‘yes’ on the measures. Specifically, the ordinances limit local law enforcement from making arrests or issuing citations for most marijuana-related violations. It also prohibits police in most circumstances from considering the odour of cannabis as probable cause of a crime.

Local activists are anticipated to place ballot questions before voters in additional cities in the coming year.

Meanwhile in Colorado, Proposition 122, Access to Natural Psychedelic Substances, was passed with about 51% of the vote according to the Secretary of State’s Office.

Possession, use, cultivation and sharing of psilocybin, ibogaine, mescaline (not derived from peyote), DMT and psilocyn will be legalised for adults 21 and older, without an explicit possession limit. There will be no recreational sales component.

The Department of Regulatory Agencies will be responsible for developing rules for a therapeutic psychedelics program where adults 21 and older can visit a licensed healing centre to receive treatment under the guidance of a trained facilitator.

There will be a two-tiered regulatory model, where only psilocybin and psilocyn will be permitted for therapeutic use at licensed healing centres until June 2026. After that point, regulators can decide whether to also permit regulated therapeutic use of DMT, ibogaine and mescaline.

This makes Colorado the second state, following Oregan, to legalise psychedelic substances.

With another Midterm election over the US continues its slow march forward with regards to drug reform policy but like most of the world, including Canada, when it comes to dealing with the many who are in prison for cannabis offences, there is still much lacking.

When it comes to Biden's pardons announced Oct. 6, only about 6,500 people convicted of cannabis possession at the federal level were affected. None remain in prison. Without a felony on their record, they won't be tripped up when applying for a job or trying to rent an apartment.

While this is a clear positive, Biden's pardon does not affect some 3,000 people convicted of higher level marijuana crimes who remain in federal prisons, and as many as 30,000 who are still in prison in several states, according to the advocacy group the Last Prisoner Project. Those numbers do not reflect people with convictions for marijuana possession at the state level, although approximately 2 million marijuana convictions have been expunged or pardoned by states where the drug is now legal.
