Exploring Mining Episode 101: Special Edition Featuring an Interview with Alex Blood, Executive Director, Mineral Resources for South Australia’s Department for Energy and Mining Discussing ExploreSA’s Gawler Challenge

We were joined by Alex Blood, Executive Director, Mineral Resources for South Australia’s Department for Energy and Mining, on this Special Edition of the Exploring Mining Podcast, to discuss ExploreSA’s Gawler Challenge. Described by Blood as “the largest ever open data exploration challenge that a government has run,” the Gawler Challenge tasks competitors to identify or predict areas of potential mineralisation within the Gawler Craton, using any technique. The results will then be made available to the public, whereupon companies can explore for deposits in the region.

The interview covers the interdisciplinary collaboration bringing together both traditional and new geoscience and data science approaches to mineral exploration witnessed in the competition, even including machine learning and AI approaches.

A press release published today by the Department for Energy and Mining indicates that, following the Gawler Challenge results, “the State Government has allocated an additional $5 million from the Economic and Business Growth Fund to the Geological Survey of South Australia (GSSA) to flesh out the winning concepts into prospects for exploration companies to make the next big discovery.”
