As we enter the weekend, data from CoinMarketCap indicates that the total crypto market capitalization is sitting at $140 billion USD. This matches the recent low we saw on Tuesday after a slight recovery up to over $150 billion in the last couple of days. Bitcoin (BTC) and most of the top listed altcoins by market cap are in the red, albeit this time only in the single digits. Bitcoin is trading at $4330, XRP at $0.41, Ether (ETH) at $122 and Bitcoin Cash (BCH) at $208.
Coinpedia reports that the European Union is forming a blockchain initiative and has invited the continent"s top banks to join. Known as the European Union International Association for Trusted Blockchain Applications (IATBA), the organization is dedicated to exploring the potential of blockchain technology. Among those invited are Spanish banks BBVA (NYSE:BBVA) and Banco Santander (NYSE:SAN).
Reuters reports that French tobacco shops will sell bitcoin starting early next year through fintech company Keplerk. Adil Zakhar, Keplerk"s director for strategy development, commented on the development:
"Tobacco shop owners are the best channel as they are trusted by customers and they are used to sell vouchers such as credit for mobile phones."
In response, the country"s central bank, which does not supervise Keplerk initiative, warned:
"Those are purely speculative assets and not currencies. Those who invest in bitcoin or other crypto-assets do it at their own risk."
A blog post yesterday revealed that the Gibraltar Blockchain Exchange has been licensed by the country"s financial regulator, the Gibraltar Financial Services Commission (GFSC). This move makes the Gibraltar Stock Exchange (GSC) the world"s first stock exchange to own and run a regulated blockchain exchange. GBX CEO Nick Cowan commented on the news:
