Russian PM Says Don't "Bury" Crypto Because of Bear Market, Brave Browser to Pay Users for Viewing Ads, HSBC Reports $250 Billion in Blockchain Transactions for 2018 and Binance Expands to Jersey

After the tumble the crypto market took late last week, total market capitalization has been wobbly coming out of the weekend. Data from CoinMarketCap indicates a $122 billion total market cap at press time, up a bit from Sunday's $117 billion low. Meanwhile the top 100 coins listed by market cap are a mix of red and green, with Bitcoin (BTC) trading for $3660, XRP for $0.33 and Ether (ETH) for $123.
Speaking at the Gaidar international scientific forum, Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev advised against writing cryptocurrencies off despite the recent bear market trend, according to local outlet TASS. He did, however, advocate monitoring cryptocurrencies in light of the recent volatility.
"But this, of course, is not a reason to bury them. Here ... there are both light sides and dark sides, as in any social phenomenon, in any economic institute. And we should just watch closely what happens to them"
ICO-funded internet browser Brave is previewing a new digital advertising model that pays users for viewing ads. The ads are opt-in and users will be able to earn Basic Attention Tokens (BAT). Users can view up to 20 ads per day and will receive 70 percent of the ad revenue after the 1.0 release.
CCN reports that financial services giant HSBC (NYSE:HSBC) reported $250 billion in settled transactions in 2018, using blockchain technology. In the same year, HSBC settled over 3 million blockchain-based foreign exchange transactions. The report quotes Richard Bibbey, HSBC's Acting Head of Foreign Exchange and Commodities, on HSBC's potential future blockchain plans:
"Following prosperous implementation inside the bank, we are now exploring how this technology could help multinational clients - who also have multiple treasury centers and cross-border supply chains - better manage foreign exchange flows within their organizations."
Cointelegraph reports that crypto exchange giant Binance is launching a crypto trading platform on the Channel Island Jersey. Binance Jersey is designed for fiat-to-crypto trading of the euro (EUR) and British pound (GBP) with Bitcoin (BTC) and Ethereum (ETH) within Europe and the United Kingdom.
